Supporting Bosch Malaysia’s DGNB certification with IAQ testing

Bosch Malaysia

When Bosch Malaysia completed construction of their new factory, green building certification under the German Sustainable Building Council's DGNB scheme was part of the plan from the outset. The facility includes both office and cleanroom environments - two very different spaces with distinct air quality demands - and getting the certification across the line required independent verification that indoor air quality met DGNB's criteria. Airscan was brought in to conduct that assessment, covering the parameters most directly tied to the building materials and fit-out: total volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde.

The Brief

Bosch Malaysia needed an accredited indoor air quality assessment across their newly constructed facility – covering both office and cleanroom spaces – focused on TVOC and formaldehyde levels, to satisfy the IAQ requirements of the DGNB certification scheme.

What We Did

Airscan conducted the post-construction air quality assessment across the relevant areas of the facility, measuring total volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde concentrations in both the office and cleanroom environments. The assessment was completed within the agreed project timeline, with the analysis framed directly against DGNB’s certification criteria to give the project team a clear compliance picture.

How It Works

TVOC and formaldehyde are the primary markers of off-gassing from building materials, adhesives, finishes, and furniture – the compounds most likely to be elevated in a newly constructed building before the indoor environment has had time to stabilise. Measuring these in the post-construction window, before occupation, is both the point at which concentrations are most meaningful and the point at which any intervention is still straightforward to implement. Where readings fall within acceptable limits, the data serves as documented evidence for the certification body. Where deviations appear, they trigger targeted recommendations to bring the building into compliance before staff move in.

Outcomes

The assessment concluded successfully within the agreed timeline, producing the air quality documentation needed to support Bosch Malaysia’s DGNB certification submission. The process also established a clear protocol: any parameters falling outside acceptable limits would generate specific improvement recommendations, ensuring the facility met DGNB’s criteria rather than simply being assessed against them.
