FOD Financiën: Does probiotic cleaning actually improve the air?

FOD Financiën

Probiotic cleaning products have been marketed on the basis that they do more than conventional cleaners - not just removing surface dirt, but displacing harmful microorganisms and potentially improving the air in the spaces where they're used. FOD Financiën, Belgium's federal public finance service, wanted to put that claim to a proper test across their own facilities. Airscan designed and executed a multi-location measurement campaign to find out whether the products made a measurable difference to indoor air quality, and whether any effect held up over time.

The Brief

FOD Financiën needed an independent, evidence-based assessment of how probiotic cleaning products affected indoor air quality across their locations — measured before, during, and after use, and tracked over a long enough period to capture both short and long-term effects.

What We Did

Airscan ran the assessment campaign across multiple FOD Financiën locations, staggered across different time periods to build a comparative picture at both short and long-term intervals. At each location, air quality was measured in three phases — before the probiotic product was introduced, during its use, and after — allowing the effect of the product itself to be isolated from background variation. The measurement programme covered volatile organic compounds, aldehydes, and particulate matter, giving a broad enough view of air chemistry to assess whether the cleaning product was improving, degrading, or having no meaningful effect on indoor air quality.

How It Works

Testing across multiple locations and time periods is what separates a rigorous study from a single data point. Conditions vary between buildings — occupancy patterns, ventilation, existing contamination levels — so running the same before-during-after protocol across several sites produces findings that are far more generalisable than a single-location test would allow. The phased measurement structure also makes it possible to distinguish between immediate effects and changes that persist or develop over weeks of continued use.

Outcomes

The campaign gave FOD Financiën a clear, evidence-based view of how the probiotic cleaning products performed in their specific environments across both short and long-term use. Airscan was able to advise the public service directly on the products’ effectiveness and their suitability for broader adoption across their facilities.
